Bread and Butter Pudding

Warm, custardy, and beautifully golden, this Bread and Butter Pudding makes your kitchen smell like home. It’s a simple dessert with classic British roots that’s always welcome at any table.

  • Total Time: 40 minutes
  • Yield: 6 1x

Ingredients

Scale
  • 8 heaped cups white bread, preferably slightly stale, cut into 2.5 cm / 1" cubes

  • 1 cup sultanas or raisins (or more if you love extra sweetness!)

Egg Mixture:

  • 3 eggs

  • 1 ½ cups milk (low or full fat, but not zero fat)

  • 1 cup heavy or thickened cream (or use more milk if preferred)

  • 3 tbsp / 40g unsalted butter, melted and cooled

  • ½ cup white sugar

  • 1 tsp cinnamon powder

  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

Finishes / Serving:

  • 30g / 2 tbsp unsalted butter, melted – for top before baking

  • 20g / 1 ½ tbsp unsalted butter, melted – for brushing after baking (optional)

  • Icing sugar, for dusting

  • Ice cream, custard, or caramel sauce, for serving

Instructions

  • Preheat Oven: Set your oven to 180°C / 350°F to prepare for baking.

  • Whisk the Egg Mixture: In a large bowl, whisk the eggs lightly. Add milk, cream, butter, sugar, cinnamon, and vanilla, then whisk until smooth.

  • Soak the Bread: Add bread cubes and sultanas to the bowl. Mix gently and let it sit for about 3 minutes so the bread absorbs the custard.

  • Prepare Baking Dish: Pour the mixture into a greased 2.5L / 10-cup baking dish. Push down any sultanas on top to keep them from burning.

  • Add Melted Butter: Drizzle melted butter over the top for that lovely crisp texture.

  • Bake to Perfection: Bake for 25–30 minutes until the top turns golden brown and the center is just set but slightly wobbly.

  • Finishing Touch: Brush with the remaining melted butter for extra shine, then dust lightly with icing sugar.

  • Serve and Enjoy: Let it rest for a few minutes, then serve warm with vanilla ice cream, cream, or custard.
